The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) was created to protect the privacy of individuals’ health information. This act requires that HHS publish standards for secure exchange with electronic files, which are critical in today’s medical world.Health information is any individually identifiable data relating to the past, present or future health status of an individual. This includes personal identifiers such as names and phone numbers but also can include photographs for identification purposes.In February 2003, the Security Rule was published.
